Bertha García

GRADUATES

Berta was just 9 years old when she joined Fotokids, growing up in the small, indigenous town of Santiago Atitlán. From the start, she stood out—always smiling, curious, and eager to learn. She wasn’t just dreaming for herself, but for her family, her town, and especially for the women in her community.

In Santiago, traditional roles for women often meant staying home, raising kids, and supporting the household through embroidery or beadwork. But Berta wanted more. She saw education as a way to change not just her future, but the world around her.

When her father lost his crops and livestock, he told her he could no longer support her education. On top of financial hardship, Bertha faced criticism from neighbors who thought it was unusual for a girl to be taking photographs instead of working. Fotokids became her anchor, with a scholarship, mentorship, and a safe space to learn.

She finished high school and went on to study law at the university. Since then, Berta has worked with the Human Rights Office and the Office for Women’s Rights. She even hosts her own radio show, empowering women and raising awareness about their rights and opportunities.

And in a historic moment for her town, Berta recently ran for mayor—the first woman ever in Santiago Atitlán to run for high political office. She dreams of serving one day as both mayor and a congresswoman. Fotokids gave her the foundation to dream bigger, and today she uses those tools to empower others
